In 2011, TD initiated an artist exchange program that invites artists from southern Canada to live and work in the Arctic for a 3-week period and artists from Canada’s Arctic to travel to the South for a similar residency. Past artists have included Ed Pien, Graeme Patterson, Tim Pitsiulak, and Jutai Toonoo.
In 2016 participating artists were Cape Dorset artist Nicotye Samayualie and Montreal-based Luanne Martineau. Samayualie participated in the Banff Centre’s five-week Indigenous Visual + Digital Artist Residency. Martineau travelled to Cape Dorset where she was the artist-in-residence at Kinngait Studios.
TD Bank Group has been collecting Inuit artwork for almost fifty years. This residency program provides another kind of support that allows artists from Canada’s North to visit Southern Canada, visit collections, acquire new skills, and work alongside their peers in the Canadian art community. The southern artists who visit the Arctic have similar goals alongside outreach in local schools.
